In the East of England's Essex county, Brentwood is in the Brentwood Borough. It is likely that development of Brentwood was chiefly due to its market, its road position, and its convenient location as an administrative centre. 'Gentleman brickmaker' of Brentwood, Thomas Munn met a less noble end when he was hanged for robbing Yarmouth mail and, a few miles from Brentwood at a road junction, Gallows Corner, in Romford, his body was exhibited in chains. As does LV=, the Bank of New York Mellon has a substantial presence in Brentwood, employing 350 people there.

Encompassing the surrounding smaller suburbs and villages, Brentwood forms part of the larger Borough of Brentwood. Performing at events throughout the year, Brentwood is home to the Brentwood Imperial Youth Band. The British and International Federation of Festivals of which Queen Elizabeth II is patron has been accepted the Brentwood Performing Arts Festival into membership. Shenfield Common, King George V Playing Field, and South Weald and Thorndon country parks include a public open spaces that Brentwood has.

Next to the office for tourist information, the ruin stands in the high street, and the Brentwood parish church that is nearby retains the dedication to Canterbury's St. Thomas. When men from Stanford, Corringham, and Fobbing were summoned to Brentwood by Thomas Bampton, the commissioner, to answer as to who in Brentwood had avoided poll tax paying, the event of the Peasants' Revolt occurred. Established in 1558, founded in 1557 was Brentwood School in Ingrave Road and the Hunter's execution site is commemorated in the school by a plaque and by Sir Anthony Browne in Shenfield Road. From 1853 to 2001, Brentwood was location of Warley Hospital, a psychiatric hospital.

In Brentwood, a Company that is British East India training school for elephants and when much of the site was redeveloped as the European headquarters for the Ford Motor Company, this remained an army base that is active as an Essex Regiment depot until 1959. In Brentwood, the Brentwood Theatre and The Hermitage are the cultural buildings on the same site in the town centre. Set up in 2006 and ran 17-18 February 2007, the venue of the Brentwood International Chess Congress is the town. Brentwood Town F.C., non-League football club, and London Leopards, basketball team, who at the Brentwood Centre Arena both play, are in Brentwood.
